Kahuku Unit Hikes

Kahuku has some of the most spectacular overlooks while you discover the lower portions of this unique park.  Most of the hikes in the Kahuku unit are around two miles long and are easy to moderately difficult hike.

The longest hike is Palm Trail and is a moderately difficult 2.6-mile loop traversing scenic pastures along an ancient cinder cone, with some of the best panoramic views Kahuku has to offer. Sturdy  footwear, water, raingear, sun protection and a snack are recommended.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Kahuku Unit

Kahuku is the southern most National Park in the United States! This location is a place of dynamic landscapes with lush green fields with a blue ocean on it's horizon. Featuring rich Hawaiian traditions and a fascinating history of ranching, Kahuku is a site for many unique plant and animal species of Ka'u. Larger than the island of Oahu, Kahuku is located on Hwy 11 in Ka‘u near mile marker 70.5

Park Safety In Kahuku

Volcanic vog is a periodic presence on the Big Island of Hawaii. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has variable levels of volcanic fog in the areas of Volcano and the Kahuku unit. USGS and the National Park monitor air standards continually. Keep an eye out for posted signs within the National Park informing you of volcanic activity and air quality.
